August is here and as I said last month the mercury is rising and it's "Hot Hot Hot"!  I hope everyone is ready for the start of the new school year, I know we are here.  Last month, I attended a charity soccer tournament held at FIU between the Miami-Dade Police Department and the Miami-Dade Firefighters.

July 2017 is officially here! The year is already half over and the summer is on target to be a hot one. The mercury is rising and as the song goes, it's “Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot”! As July 4th approaches, I hope we all take a moment to step back to reflect on why this country was created, and remember the sacrifices that were made that make this the best country to live in.

Well here we are in June, the mercury is rising, the kids are anxious for school to be over and for the summer fun to begin.   Last month’s Police Memorial, which was held at Tropical Park, was another moving tribute to the many officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Here we are again with a new month starting and, as the tradition says, “April showers bring May flowers.” Another fun fact about April, it's Alcohol Awareness Month, which seems appropriate as it follows St. Patrick's Day and its tradition of consuming lots and lots of green beer.

March is here, and we all know what that means, no matter where you’re from, or your ethnicity, we all become Irish for a day.

It's February again, and love is in the air. As we move into the second month of 2017, I hope that everyone is holding true to their New Year's resolutions.  Last month, I attended a community meeting which was titled “Response to recent police involved West Perrine shooting.

Goodbye 2016 and hello 2017! Yes, another year is in the books. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  At the time of this writing, we’ve had a staggering 134 law enforcement fatalities in the year 2016. The State of Texas led the country with 18 officers killed in the line of duty, and Florida ranked 5th for in the line of duty fatalities.

It's hard to believe that it is now almost Christmas, the year has flown by! I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving, as did me and my family. Now that the turkey has finally digested, it’s time to “Deck the Halls” and get ready to hit the malls. The malls are sure to be packed, and the hunt for the ever elusive front row parking space is on.

November is here, and we all know what that means. No, it's not the countdown until we gorge on turkey and stuffing, but it's time to slow down, and to reflect on what we should give thanks for. This year we have a lot to be thankful for.

Oh, it's that time of the year again, when the store shelves are overflowing with candy and Halloween costumes. Once again this year, Party City’s biggest seller for scariest mask is that of Governor Rick Scott. His uncanny resemblance to Skeletor is unbelievable.

This month a lot of elected positions here in Miami-Dade County will be decided. Most of them Judges, State Representatives and even our Mayor. I cannot stress enough the importance of everyone getting involved in the election, and voting. Sadly, this simple task all to often is not accomplished.

Here we are in July again, officially halfway through 2016, and another hurricane season is upon us. It’s time to dust off the barbeque grills, grab the sunscreen and get ready to pay tribute to our founding fathers. Here are some fun facts about July 4th:  • The oldest continuance of Independence Day celebration in the U.S.

Another fabulous job last month by the POAT and their volunteers, at the Tropical Park Police Memorial. The event was extremely moving, and as always, it was difficult to find a dry eye in the crowd. We could not have asked for better weather or turnout for the service.

May is already upon us - where has the time gone?? Sadly, once again, officers killed in the line of duty are up by an astonishing 7%, as of April 1st, as reported by the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial.

March Madness has come and gone, and I'm not talking about college basketball either. I'm talking about the "madness" in Tallahassee during this past legislative session, and the ongoing attacks on the FRS, and other key issues. Fortunately, we made it through another session with no cuts to the pensions.

Love is in the air, and I don't mean Valentine's Day love!! The County is now playing catch up, it’s in full gear on hiring police officers, dispatchers and other county personnel. We are buying cars, cleaning parks and cutting the grass at record pace. Now what could be the cause of all this good will coming from downtown? Yes, you got it, its election time.

Well another year is in the bag. So long 2015, and hello 2016! Last year held a lot of challenges, and we’ll have more to come in this upcoming year. One due to the mass exit of officers set to retire this year, and the slow response from some elected officials to stay in front of this problem, together with a slew of other problems facing the law enforcement community these days.

By Steadman Stahl,  Executive Vice President Now that school is back in session, we all get to spend more time in traffic. I hope everyone had a good summer with their families, and was able to take some time off and spend it with their loved ones.

WOW!! August is already here and we all know what that means. It's the start of the fuzzy math season. It's the time of the year when city managers across the County, along with our own Dade County Mayor, Carlos “the sky is falling” Gimenez,  get on their soap boxes and tell us how bad it still is out there, and how the economy has still not recovered.
