  • Message From The Vice President, April 2018
    Updated On: Apr 02, 2018
    DAVID GREENWELL, Vice President

First and foremost, I would like to say thanks to all of you that believed it was time for change in the leadership of Dade County PBA and showed such support for us all during the campaign.

As I began this journey, many of you asked why I would come out of retirement and go back to a full-time job and for me, the answer was an easy decision. Like many of you, after seeing the dismal path the previous administration was taking this organization down, it was apparent that it was no longer about the members but a small few that reaped the benefits and controlled what went in and out on a daily basis.

I joined this organization in April of 1983 and for most of the 32 years as a member, I enjoyed the
camaraderie and brotherhood of the Dade County PBA. But somewhere along the way, I think the focus was lost, and the members were no longer being put first. At board meetings, differing points of view were frowned upon, and questions or concerns were often missed in the minutes. Everyone on the board should be able to have a say, and if a question or concern arises, even if it is an opposing idea, it should be addressed openly. Now it will be. When I think of some of the things that concerned me, the lack of transparency, the need for term limits, the difficulty running for the executive board, losing members and entire bargaining units instead of increasing our membership, it was time for me to do something.

Like it or not, to be effective in achieving the best possible outcome for our members, we must develop amicable relationships with the appropriate decision makers at all levels. A certain threshold of professionalism will allow our team to be tough when we must but also to be effective for the long term and I for one am tired of wasting money and losing at the same time.

It is abundantly clear that many of you had lost faith in those who were supposed to be doing their best to represent you and I am confident that we will be able to restore your faith and earn your respect.
Since formally taking office on January 29th, 2018, it has been good to see so many of you come out to meetings and negotiation sessions to let your voices be heard. I can share that our first month has been very busy but yet refreshing to see those who previously had difficult relationships with our former administration, now requesting meetings and moving forward in a positive manner.  As long as all invested parties can work together, and remember to keep focused on the most important thing, our members, I know we will do great things.

The day after we took office we were in Tallahassee mending relationships and building platforms for a new and improved Dade County PBA. Just a few days later, we were surprised to hear that the
Independent Review Panel had reared its head again under a new name and Commissioner Jordan was seeking funding to the tune of $700,000/year plus, for this ridiculous and damning citizens panel. In a
hurried response to defeat the measure, President Steadman Stahl, Director Perez and Mayor Gimenez vehemently objected to the item but what was unique was they all worked together unlike never before. This fight is not over and we may have to call on our members to show up at a commission meeting. Remember our strength is in our membership and we will continue to keep you informed.

Again, I am humbled by your support for us all and I am excited about the future of our organization under the new leadership. I want to personally thank you all for your confidence in us and know we will all continue to earn your respect on a daily basis. Stay safe out there, and wait for your back-up. Please email me anytime at greenwell@dcpba.org. To stay informed, please follow ‘Dade County PBA’ on Facebook and Instagram.
